Greetings from Dr Tomato
It’s Saturday morning, the 3rd of April, and about 75 degrees out! Someone pinch me! Daffodils are blooming in the garden and my garlic is already about 6 inches tall. Even if we get a foot of snow – I’m done shoveling for this year!
I know some of you are asking why the newsletter didn’t get to you last Thursday.
Well, the simple answer is that I have been battling pneumonia for close to two weeks. Most of you know that last year was not a good year for me health wise. The neurosurgery and 8 months of antibiotic therapy also beat my immune system up a little bit. What started as a case of the flu a couple of weeks ago went down hill pretty fast. High fevers, mind numbing fatigue and a cough so deep and constant that I could hardly get a break combined to put me down and out. I could add the part about passing out and falling down an entire flight of stairs but suffice it to say I was VERY sick. However, a trip to the doctor and some medication has me climbing out of the abyss and starting to work again. The soil is calling me!
I am therefore going to ask your understanding when I tell you that I will try to get a couple of informational articles written and out to all of you this week. One question in particular that I am asked frequently at this time of year is “can I use pressure treated lumber to build my raised garden beds?” As always, the answer is a bit more difficult than a simple YES or NO. I will answer that question this week.
It is also time to start planting in your low tunnels or to get your low tunnels up. James and I now have 4 foot and 6 foot low tunnel hoops, plastic for the tunnels, raised bed garden kits and all the plants you need to start growing! You can contact us directly through the web site or find most of the products at Blue Seal in Rochester.
For those of you interested in growing giant pumpkins, don’t forget that my friend Hiram Watson will be giving a talk at the Farmington Public Library this coming Wednesday evening – April 7th – at 6:00pm. Hiram is the MAN when it comes to giant pumpkin growing!
Dr. Tomato will be at Blue Seal in Rochester on Saturday April 10th from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. I will have low tunnel hoops, plastic, raised garden bed kits and plenty of plants that can be set out now. I will also be talking on getting your garden ready for spring, choosing varieties for this planting year, when to plant what and answering any and all questions you might have. So come join me!
So once again, I thank you for your understanding about the delay with this week’s newsletter. For strictly medical reasons
I am now going to go out and sit in the warm sun for a little while. As always, please feel free to contact me/us with any growing questions you have. I should be back on track this week. Enjoy your weekend my friends.
Until Next Time,
